Parametricismo - On Parametricism

  • Ogni architettura diviene monumento non-universale

The Parametricism of Patrick Schumacker is an app of the BIM technology in the direction of a parametrical control of the ‘constructing-form’ of architecture. The bigger is  the size the better BIM works, since the interfaces of construction reduce proportionately and architecture, in relative terms, becomes more ‘elemental’. In other words, the more the artifact is about the size you can easier control the individual components: structure, plugging / covering, systems and finishes.

The Parametricism 'solve' this ' effectiveness gradient’ turning to the only shape, and therefore can be applied equally to large and the small artifact. While this allows the design of crossing across the area of housing, on the other diminishes the effectiveness of the usual checks on the field of buildings. We are not nostalgic, but it is certain that we are entering a project dimension that could be defined at the moment as interreal. Indeed, the interaction between the physical reality and physical algorithms of BIM are interrelated by a design that it can verify the constructability on the one hand and imaginary efficiency on the other, placing the extremes on the same conceptual level.
If in his writings Schumacker reaffirms that Parametricism has the strength of Modernism and is the only real news / alternative to postmodernity, we affirm that we are now beyond any categorization. We should ask ourselves how we can now define an historical category without the possibility of any solution of continuity with previous categorizations. Postmodernism has already placed the word end to any unitary and systemical constitution of theory and practice, so that, through the interdisciplinary, contamination and deconstruction, the fragments of modernity have revealed their recombinant ability, rejoining themselves in the continuum of contemporary culture. Without these significant transits could not be also the Parametricism.

Architecture (until Deconstructivism) was established as a structure open to penetration by a common thought (though it may be perceived as a designer), who founded both the communicability and the representation, in addition to give, as mentioned, a time for the verification of the procedures that performed the world. The architectural Parametricism (and we persist in wanting to preserve the distinction between architecture and interior and industrial design because the scale of action is a mechanism for agreement of meanings between production systems and interpretation, so that different design scales of problems lead to different designs) is a single unfathomable, impenetrable to the usual mechanisms of theoretical verification. Specifically (and limited) the recent work of Zaha Hadid is really a body without organs, indivisible. The attempt to reach the uniqueness and novelty in ZH is through the conscious transformation of the usual logo-technical paradigms:

- Shape / Function

- Internal / External

- Vertical / horizontal

- Structure / curtains

then resolving the issue of text / context through the creation of landscapes, which gave priority to the perceptive issue instead of the historical / critical one. The overcoming of these pairs is a diagrammatic long and demanding commitment, which inevitably create hybrids that tend (of course) to bring the surface architecture to continuous mass, undifferentiated and the sublime. We stress that here the critical operation is clear and refined, and reflected very strongly in the architecture of ZH. The Iraqi architect has realized that having deconstructed the world, she must consider then how to rebuild it through a writing / drawing, without giving anything to modernist logical/structural construction.

But we believe that the reconstruction of the world is, indeed, an act of creation and thus independent of the need to build around it a new paradigm. The emergence of the unity (in architectural artifact) has been misunderstood and has led to compare some recent architecture to sculpture. But the mistake is only a shadow of passage, since the element of the design is (again?) the curved surface, not the mass. The architecture does not intend to become a sculpture, even though both are still subjected to changes depending on scale.

Finally, if we intended to write a comparison between Parametricism and transarchitecture we would give these guidelines:

- Occurs overcoming pairs diagrammatic above, especially the shape/ function one,

- The process of differentiation of Nature and Metaphysics is almost complete and used the new and the hybrid as 'lens' for design,

- The differentiation, however, affect the process of representation that binds man and his civilization with architectural artifacts. In other words, these artifacts interact with the networks (at different scales) and often  ignore their local surroundings

- The Parametricism absolutely must put in shape with the same formal laws all the artifacts (buildings, furniture, decorative accessories) in order to force on alienation of the artifact, and thus on its inevitable originality

- The absolute independence of the artifact to the ‘designing subject’ undermines the process of verification of the world through its construction

- Each architecture becomes a non-universal monument
